There are 5 main parts: cerebrum, the brainstem, cerebellum, limbic system, and spinal cord. Cerebrum takes up 7/10 of the brain, and it does most of the brain’s work. It has wrinkled surface, and if it is unfolded, it takes up about 3ft. square. The pattern on the surface is different by people. It is a place where the thinking, learning, decision making, joking, and moving happens. The outside layer of the cerebrum is called the cortex, which moves ‘Voluntary muscles’. Voluntary muscles are muscles which can be moved by just thinking about it. Cerebellum is located at the back of the brain. It takes up 1/8 of the brain, and it sends message to muscles. It also remembers how to move. Next, there is an organ called Brain Stem. It helps maintain some of the body’s automatic activities. (Steady heartbeat, regular breathing, and effective digestion). The lung inhales more if the person is running, and when he/she is frightened, the brain stem makes her/his heartbeat rapid, and muscles tense in case of running. So it is deadly when people get hit at the back of the head. The other system in the brain is ‘Limbic system’. It controls emotion and moods. It connects feeling with the physical reaction. They also form memories, which is a way to store information. There are different rooms which the memories could be stored. When a person went cycling, the Limbic system stores the memory at the ‘Motor’ section. When a person listened to the songs, the Limbic system stored the memory at the ‘Auditory’ section. It is very important since without memories, there is no learning. Finally, the spinal cord is another part of the brain. It is a central nervous system. The adults’ spinal cord is 17 inches, and 31 pairs of those form a whole length of the spinal cord. They carry signals from the brain to each muscle. s 2. The Purpose of the brain The brain is one of the important organs in people’s body. It controls emotions such as love, anger, sadness, and happiness. It also stores memory, which are essential which allows people to think, decide, remember, and dream. It is also an organ that passes signals to every parts of the body, telling how to move, when to smile, what to do, etc. There are billions of electrical and chemical signals existing, which allow human body to move, and create activities.
3. Brain injuries/ diseases –Epilepsy It is one famous illness in the Brain, which 1/100 people are affected. The cause it often unknown, so it is hard to prevent it, but taking medication is one way to cure the disease. It happens when the electrical signals (nerve signals) get disturbed, or when its signals are ineffectively passed. Then, people won’t be able to control their own movements and will be unconscious.
4. Brain Injuries / Diseases –Strokes Stokes is a form of a brain damage by blood loss. It happens when the blood flow to the brain gets disturbed by blood clot. Lack of blood means there are lack of O2 and the nutrients, which causes the death of cells. It mostly occurs to the elders who have heart disease, and high blood pressure. When they have strokes, they have to learn speaking, writing, and reading all over again.
5. Questions -What are the 5 parts of the brain?
-What does the Cerebellum do?
-How does the stroke occur?
-Why does the Epilepsy happen?
-What is the purpose of the brain?
